MHCC Receives Renewed 10-Year Mandate

Ottawa, ON – The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is extremely pleased that its mandate has been renewed by the Federal Government for another 10 years beginning in 2017.

As outlined today in the House of Commons by the Hon. Joe Oliver, Minister of Finance, this renewed mandate will allow the MHCC to build on the momentum gained in the seven years since its inception.

“This is wonderful news for the mental health community,” says Louise Bradley, President and CEO of the MHCC. “The MHCC’s laudable achievements were only made possible by the support and collaboration of our outstanding partners. Together, we have advocated for change.  And together, we are succeeding.”

Since its creation in 2007, the MHCC has received international acclaim for its many ground-breaking programs and initiatives. These include Changing Directions, Changing Lives: The Mental Health Strategy for Canada, the launch of the world’s first National Standard for Psychological Health and Safety in the Workplace, and the leadership of At Home/Chez Soi, the largest research study of its kind, supporting the Housing First approach.

“This renewed mandate signifies a new chapter for the MHCC,” says the Hon. Michael Wilson, Board Chair. “Together we will continue to build on our accomplishments and strive towards our common goal: improving the mental health of Canadians.”

The MHCC anticipates launching the Mental Health Action Plan for Canada in the fall of 2015. It will address emerging issues within the mental health system and will lay a foundation for the MHCC’s future work.
