Promising Practices for Successful Student Transitions

Over the last two years, the University of Guelph has introduced two new programs to support first year students with mental health issues. The first is first year course for credit for students who are struggling with mental health issues. The second is a summer transition program that involved Conestoga College and the Boards of Education in the Guelph. Both programs were extensively researched in terms of effectiveness and students’ experience. Both programs are now incorporated as part of the core program for students with mental health issues.
Participants will learn about the transition from high school to college or university for students who experience mental health disabilities, particularly with regards to:
- The structures, personnel and processes that are needed to facilitate the transition
- Outcomes that characterize positive student mental health in the transition
- Useful conceptual frameworks regarding student mental health promotion
- Interventions to promote mental health in this context and evidence of their effectiveness
Dr. Margaret N. Lumley, Ph.D. C.Psych.
Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, University of Guelph
Dr. Margaret Lumley is an Associate Professor in the Clinical Psychology program at the University of Guelph Dr. Lumley’s research examines the cognitive, emotional and interpersonal factors that contribute to emotional problems and also that support resilience and wellbeing among youth. Her research work has been funded by the Ontario Mental Health Foundation, Canada Foundation for Innovation and Ministry of Education.

Bruno has been involved in the organization of campus awareness programs related to mental health and works with community agencies and schools to foster a greater understanding of mental health issues.
