Mental Health Strategies

Why is it important?

Mental health strategies in post-secondary institutions establish practices, policies, and frameworks that intends to guide staff (front-line, managers, department heads, administrators) to promote and reach certain goals/objectives related to mental wellbeing on campus. Mental health strategies are important because it provides clear direction for institutions to build a mentally well campus, outlines where the institutions must prioritize to see results, and a way to continuously improve wellbeing through data collection, evaluation, and various metrics.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a difference between a mental health strategy and a mental health framework?

Yes! A mental health framework provides a bigger picture and can include strategies in them but are less specific compared to a mental health strategy. However, these terms can be seen interchangeably within the post-secondary sector.

Where do I start?

You can first start by talking to people who have been through the journey of developing a mental health strategy at a post-secondary institution, as well as gathering information on key directions to focus on. This includes completing an external and internal review of student and staff needs, evaluating any past strategies that are available, and looking at campus surveys and figuring out the process for development. Some key things to keep in mind are ways to include underrepresented student and staff groups, student voices, sustainability, and needs based on the current climate (whether its social, economic, or political).
