Nov 21 – Survivors of Suicide Loss Day

All across Canada, people and organizations will observe International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day on November 21, 2015.

There are many ways to participate in International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day. The Mental Health Commission of Canada is recognizing this day by sharing messages of hope and remembrance on our online “wall.” We encourage you to click on the “Add Your Message” button and share your personal message and use #raiseHOPE to promote awareness on social media.

International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is a time for those whose lives have been impacted by a suicide death to come together in collective remembrance, healing and support. This year it takes place on Saturday, November 21, and the theme is Family Journeys: Healing and Hope After a Suicide.

Each year, nearly 4,000 Canadians end their lives by suicide and for every one of those deaths it has been shown that six to ten individuals are profoundly impacted, many of them family members. By these estimates, between 24,000 and 40,000 Canadians become “Survivors of Suicide Loss.” Grief and bereavement from a death by suicide is a unique, isolating, and often stigmatizing experience.
