University of Guelph receives $770,000 to enhance mental health programming

Programs promoting mental health and wellness among students, particularly those with aboriginal backgrounds, has received a big funding boost at the University of Guelph. Local MP and Ontario Education Minister Liz Sandals on Friday announced more than $770,000 in funding to U of G for the initiatives. Sandals said in an interview the late-teens and early 20s is often a difficult intermediary period for people and needs to be addressed. It’s a time when serious mental health issues can surface, with the funding intended to address this. « This really is wonderful news, » university president Franco Vaccarino, noting he has a background and interest in mental health services, so the issue is close to his heart. He’s a former executive vice-president of programs and research vice-president at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health. He praised the government’s proactive approach as « forward looking. » Young people in transition in their lives face « uncertainty and stress, » Vaccarino said.
