Resource from the Youth Gambling Awareness Program on how to talk to youth about sports betting and resources to support individuals talking to youth.

Youth are especially vulnerable to gambling harms due to their developing brains and the highly persuasive nature of gambling advertisements. These ads often promote fun and excitement while ignoring the risks and ensures casinos and betting platforms profit in the long run. Online sports betting is linked to five times higher rates of problem gambling, and “live betting” during games further increases risk by triggering emotional highs and lows that can encourage reckless betting.

To address these risks, the program encourages parents and guardians to talk openly with youth. Key strategies include discussing the difference between skill-based sports and luck-based gambling, teaching money management and budgeting, and reinforcing safer gambling habits like setting limits and avoiding chasing losses. Recognizing warning signs, like behavioral changes, emotional outbursts during games, and borrowing money, can help adults intervene early.

Lastly, YGAP provides tools and resources to support families, including webinars, and workshops. The program stresses the importance of education, open communication, and reducing stigma to help youth make safer, more informed choices regarding gambling.
