Funding boosts mental-health worker training

Vancouver Island University has received over $66,000 in one-time funding for 12 spaces in its Community Mental Health Worker certificate program, as part of a province-wide initiative to provide additional support for shortterm health education programs. « The program from this targeted funding will help VIU students gain skills and prepare for a career in a job where there is current demand, » Parksville-Qualicum MLA Michelle Stilwell said in a news release last week. »Our government has listened to communities, including on Vancouver Island, and is helping them meet the need for local front-line health-care workers. « Offered at VIU’s Nanaimo campus, the Community Mental Health Worker certificate program is recognized as a qualification for employment for positions within the Vancouver Island Health Authority.
