Gambling within Post-Secondary Institutions

In this webinar, we will be joined by Dr Sasha Stark from Greo Evidence Insights and Dr Andrew Kim from the University of Calgary to discuss gambling within the post-secondary context. Specifically, they will discuss topics including what problem gambling/gambling disorder is, the recent policy changes within Canada and Ontario, as well as the rise of sports betting and online gambling. Prevention resources (such as the Lower Risk Gambling Guidelines) and support resources (self-help and professional treatments) will be addressed. Closed captioning in French will be available.

Speaker Bios

Dr. Sasha Stark is Director of Research and Evidence Services at Greo Evidence Insights, an independent knowledge translation and exchange organization working across the health and wellbeing sectors. Sasha is an internationally known gambling researcher, having worked in the field for over 15 years. In her current role, she oversees development of Greo’s knowledge synthesis products, leads research activities, and works with stakeholders globally. Her research interests include the intersections of gambling with substance use and mental health, the social predictors of gambling behaviour and harm, and gambling harm prevention and reduction among priority populations.

Dr. Andrew (Hyounsoo) Kim (Ph.D., R.Psych) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychology at the University of Calgary and an Adjunct Scientist at University of Ottawa Institute of Mental Health Research at The Royal. He is also the Chair of CPA’s Addiction Psychology Section. Dr. Kim is a national expert on sports betting since the legislative changes, and is often invited to present on the topic of sports betting and has given numerous media interviews on the topic for outlets such as CBC and CityTV. Dr. Kim’s clinical interests are in providing evidence-based care for people with co-occurring addictions and mental health difficulties. Relatedly, his research interest lies in developing an integrated treatment for substance and behavioural addictions and their mental health comorbidities.
