Indigenizing Mental Health Care Within the Post-Secondary Setting

In this webinar, we are joined by Tyler Twarowski of CMHA- Cochrane Timiskaming on what decolonizing and Indigenizing mental health care can look like within the post-secondary context. Informed by his current PhD work, profession and his Métis heritage, Tyler will discuss key elements of Indigenous worldview that could be incorporated into services and programs and how this would benefit Indigenous and non-Indigenous students alike.

Presenter Bio

Tyler Twarowski is a proud Métis from Saskatchewan who has made a home in northern Ontario. He has dedicated his career to making a positive impact in thfield of mental health and addictions. Currently, he serves as the Director of Service at CMHA (Canadian Mental Health Association) – Cochrane Timiskaming. In this role, he’s had the privilege of working on critical initiatives that address mental health and addiction issues in our community.

Additionally, Tyler is pursuing a PhD in the Faculty of Education at Queen’s University, specializing in the health sciences, with a specific focus on Indigenous perspectives. His research centers on the topic of Indigenizing mental health care in Canada, aiming to bridge gaps in the understanding and support for Indigenous communities. His journey is deeply rooted in a commitment to Indigenous education and cultural empowerment. Tyler believes that fostering an understanding of Indigenous perspectives and collaborating with Indigenous communities is essential for transformative change.

Tyler is driven by the prospect of leading initiatives that will nurture understanding, promote collaboration, and ultimately drive transformative change in the field of mental health and addictions. His goal is to contribute to a more reciprocal approach to mental health in Canada. He is excited about the opportunities ahead, and look forward to sharing his knowledge, experiences, and passion with the campus staff he’ll be addressing. Together, we can work towards a healthier and more equitable future for all.
