Episode 13 – Academic Accommodation Study and Recommendations for Post-secondary Institutions with Centennial College

In this episode, our guests Carla Grey, Jasmine Balakumaran, Joyce Tsui and Marsha Astrop (all from Centennial College) will highlight their academic accommodation study. The research project was created to learn more about the experiences students encounter in their academic accommodation journey within the Collaborative Bachelor of Science Nursing (BScN) and Practical Nursing (PN) programs and to identify potential strategies to support them. During the episode, the Centennial team will detail their findings, share their recommendations to improve on-campus academic accommodations, and reveal their plans to work with students in other health-regulated programs.

About Joyce Tsui

Joyce Tsui, RN, MN, PhD Candidate is a nursing faculty member for the Collaborative Nursing Degree program at Centennial College. Joyce appreciates the opportunity to support nursing students as an educator, and to collaborate with her colleagues on various research projects. She had the opportunity to participate in different research projects, such as Virtual Gaming Simulation, examining students’ sense of belonging, and nursing students’ experience with academic accommodation. Her professional and personal experiences in nursing education had led her to her current research interests. Currently, Joyce is a Ph.D. Candidate at York University’s School of Nursing. Her research interest is in academic accommodation and the medicalization of students with mental health challenges.

About Marsha Astrop

Marsha Astrop RN, BScN, MScN educated faculty within the Practical Nursing program at Centennial College whom is a coordinator in semester two B, three and four. Marsha teaches within both the classroom and lab settings and has a passion for exploring ways to support student learning and prompt engagement in fun and interactive ways. She believes in supporting students within their academic journeys to become successful practicing nurses.

About Jasmine Balakumaran

Jasmine Balakumaran, RN, is a Masters prepared faculty member who teaches in the Collaborative Nursing Degree program at Centennial College. She currently teaches in the classroom, lab and clinical settings with year 2 undergraduate students and strives to meet individual learning needs through the integration of diverse teaching methodologies including engaging technologies and thoughtful, inclusive interaction.

About Tracey Persaud

Tracey Persaud RN, BScN, MN is a nursing faculty member for the Collaborative Nursing Degree program between Durham College and Ontario Tech University. Tracey is focused on creating an inclusive and supportive learning environment that will allow for nursing students to discover their strengths. Prior to Tracey’s teaching endeavours, she spent her time in various clinical settings supporting pediatric patients.

About Carla Grey

Carla Grey is a Counsellor in the Centre for Accessible Learning and Counselling Services for the past thirteen years. She is the current Chair of the College Committee on Accessibility Issues. Carla is pursuing a Doctorate in Education in Counselling and Psychotherapy at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education/University of Toronto where she is pursuing research in Black Masculinity and Multicultural Counselling.
