Accessibility & Accommodations

In this webinar, we invite collaborators from the newly released Accessibility & Accommodations Toolkit to speak to the process of writing and reviewing the toolkit and share some key insights from their roles as accessibility and accommodations professionals on campus. Our guests will highlight their thoughts on accommodations, accessibility, and the stigma around disability. Come learn how to make your campus more inclusive of students and staff with disabilities.

Presenter Bios

Audrey Healy is an accessibility counsellor and the coordinator of Accessible Education Services at Fleming College. She has had the privilege of working with disabled students since 1991. She is a recipient of the Ontario College Counsellors’ Leadership Award in recognition of her commitment to the counselling profession and is the proud co-author of the O.C.C. Ethics Casebook. Audrey is an active member of Fleming College’s Equity Diversity & Inclusion Council, and her next exciting challenge is to help develop a plan for Fleming College to implement the proposed AODA Post Secondary Education Standard.

Jennifer Gillies, PhD, is Director of AccessAbility Services at the University of Waterloo, where she supports a team of professionals who design and facilitate academic accommodation plans and services for university students with disabilities and disabling conditions. Jennifer approaches her work from a human rights perspective, which she honed while earing a degree in Critical Disabilities Studies, and a certificate in Human Rights Theory and Practice. Prior to working in this field, Jennifer’s graduate research program involved participatory action research with university students with disabilities which aimed to create accessible and compassionate campus communities.

Jenn Meksula has been involved in education for almost 25 years.  She has served in roles of teacher, Social Worker for students in an alternative education program, post-secondary personal counsellor and now, Accessibility Services Counsellor at Fanshawe College.  In addition to her role as counsellor, Jenn is also the counsellor coordinator and a member of the team who completes psychological-educational assessments students attending the college.  She recently returned from a professional development leave where she focused on the benefits and importance of incorporating Universal Design principles in the learning environment.

Deandra Christopher is an Accessibility Consultant working at a Toronto college who is passionate about accessibility, inclusion & universal design. She has worked with neurodiverse students and families for over 15 years. She is thrilled about the opportunity to help design this great resource.
